The Benefits of Working With an Independent Agent

McLaughlin Associates is an Independent, local, family-owned agency. We don’t work for insurance companies, we work for you. As an independent agent, we’re not tethered to just one company. We have the flexibility and the connections to provide the right coverage for your cars, motorcycles, trucks, motor homes, recreational vehicles, and antique or classic autos.

We invite you to bring your automobile insurance coverage questions to our personal auto experts. We’ll explain these and other benefits of working with an independent agency.

  • Multiple Carriers: We have working relationships with Travelers, The Hartford, Metlife, National Grange, Progressive, and other major insurance companies.
  • Coverage Options: We customize your liability limits, deductible, and other options so you don’t pay for coverage you don’t need.
  • Multiple Quotes: When you want to compare auto insurance premiums, we make it easy with quotes from multiple companies.
  • Local Professional Service: We live and work in the community so we give you professional service but we treat you like a friend and neighbor.

Let Us Help You Understand Your Automobile Insurance Policy

At McLaughlin Associates Insurance Agency, we want you to be properly insured and well-informed. We understand that even the simplest auto policies contain confusing insurance jargon. Still, we believe it’s important to know what coverages you’re receiving for your premium dollars. Here is a brief overview of the basics.

Auto Liability Coverage

In Connecticut, you must have liability insurance to protect other vehicles and their occupants from your negligent actions. The minimum bodily injury liability limits are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. The minimum property damage liability limit is $25,000 per accident. We can discuss your liability coverage and explain why you should consider higher limits.

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage pays for the damages your car sustains after colliding with a vehicle or another object. Your coverage pays only when the damage exceeds your deductible. If your vehicle is an older model (not vintage or antique), we should discuss why it may be more cost-efficient to drop your collision coverage.

Comprehensive Coverage

Some personal auto insurance policies refer to this coverage as “Other Than Collision.” It pays for damages to your car caused by falling objects, broken glass, accidents with animals, and other damages that don’t involve a “collision” as defined by your auto policy

Uninsured Motorist Coverages

Under Connecticut law, you must have Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage with limits equal to your liability coverage. You may increase your UM/UIM limits to an amount that’s double your Bodily Injury liability limit. UM coverage pays for injuries that you and your passengers sustain when an uninsured, hit-and-run, or unidentified driver negligently injures you in an accident.

Underinsured Motorist Coverages

When the value of your injuries exceed the negligent driver’s liability limits, your Underinsured Motorist coverage pays the difference between the negligent driver’s liability coverage and your UIM coverage. Your settlement cannot exceed the dollar value of your injury.

We understand that even a simple UM/UIM explanation can seem complicated. We’d be happy to provide more details about these important coverages.
